Is there a way to set up a notification to ensure that learners only get a single notification for a learning plan instead of each of the 15 courses in the learning plan?

I have been looking into this myself. What I have been able to identify to stop this is removing the courses from the course notifications. The issue that arises is this will now require you to add every new course to the course notifications to assure others are communicated to about it.

Sure there is and @emily.mccarthy is calling to an aspect of it.

I would want to say consider this approach:

An LMS definitely should not be wired to be as chatty as it can be - and everyone should be saved the right level of communication to take action with.

Start with these three ideas:

  1. I would actually disable any global generic all course and all audience or even a broad branch level types of notifications first for course completions.
    1. I would say that you would want to use specific groups to drive only certain types of notifications (like for onboarding/annual training).
  2. Use digests more to help to eliminate the many notifications as well.

There are other posts that resonate similar ideas - but some good news - the notification system is bound to see an overhaul in a few and that overhaul should be out to you into the next few weeks depending on where you sit. So actually being able to responsibly curate those is going to be very doable - even for things that feel out of control.

We are struggling with this as well and do NOT want to disable any course notifications. But we have a Manufacturing Safety LP with 56 individual courses in it.

You need to consider what a best communication strategy is for your audience. The tech is there. It is implementing a best approach. I have seen teams want to totally disengage a learning system implementation because the system was too chatty.

Thank you. We are going to review the Digest workaround, but with our audience the notifications are a necessary evil. “I didn’t know I was supposed to take (insert training here)” is not a viable option when OSHA, EPA, API, ISO, etc. show up.

Sounds like many of us are challenged with the best approach to workaround this issue. We have learning plans for many of our roles, and I deactivated the course notification. I did try the digest to deliver to superadmins as a test, but it spammed a bunch of notifications for course enrollments from months ago and I’m concerned about activating that now. I believe an idea has been submitted to address this so there’s hope.

I did make one adjustment for our Safety Training for Non-manufacturing Learning Plans. Rather than have 50 different course notifications go out, I created modules with the training material in them. (see below) For example, the Incident and Reporting Module has the training material from “Accident Reporting and Medical Records” and “Bloodborne Pathogens.”  The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Injury Prevention Module contains material from “PPE,” “Hand Safety,” “Hearing Conservation,” and “Office Ergonomics.”

Same training material overall, just looks like a lot less and fewer notifications. The optics have helped if nothing else.
