Under the my activities function what does the total time figure relate to on your training record. Does the hours tally from year to year or is this in total tally figure of all my training hours on the LMS? We have had a query from a staff member trying to tally training hours for certification purposes.

+1The data reflects the total time a user has spent on the training materials since the beginning and does not reset, to my knowledge.
If you want to track this at global level, I suggest creating a Users/Courses Report that filters all the users and courses you need. In the View Options, tick the box Training Material Time (Sec), which is unfortunately displayed in seconds. Finally, you can sum the totals and convert them into hours.
