Changing custom domains - impact on email MX records in existing zone

Hi community! 

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has done this in the past:

I’m about to switch to a new custom domain for our instance. I have emails configured using DKIM in the zone I’m using for the current DNS config.

My question is - If I create a new zone for the new domain, can this exist in parallel with the existing zone that also manages email? Or will I need to copy the MX records for the email across too?).  My understanding is that you can use multiple zones to access the platform from multiple addresses anyway so this approach should be fine but it would be great to hear from anyone with first hand experience.
