How to convert csv/xls to GIFT for Test Questions?

I’m finding that Docebo only supports the GIFT format for import of questions to tests, but that format is not common among other LMS and test providers for export in my experience (more common is word, csv/excel or QTI). Does anyone know of any good tools or tricks to convert from csv to GIFT?

I was dealing with this and in the short term opted to manually create the questions. I created an Idea to address this issue

Please take a minute to read and upvote it if you agree it should be a focused area of improvement.

anyone who stumbles on this, I did find this site useful- some angel built a converter tool that supports multiple choice Qs only: https://firstcanvas.com/utilities/gift.html. My tips: you’ll need to cleanup some extra line breaks mid question that cause problems also keep an eye out for some special character encoding that gets wonky. A good regex search and replace can do this cleanup for you- something like Atom or Sublime. And don’t bother with the Categories, they won’t import in Docebo

I found this resource that offers an index of conversion tools that should help you with putting spreadsheets into GIFT format. https://docs.moodle.carleton.edu/wiki/GIFT_format#Word_processor_and_spreadsheet_tools_that_create_GIFTs

Thanks for this, it will save us a lot of time. :-)

Hi all, I know this is a long shot. I tried the links above, but they are no longer available. Can someone help with uploading test questions in a batch? I have about 17 certification assessments with 50 question each that will be randomized, and I need a way to get them in the LMS quickly. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

If you’re going to be randomizing them then I think your only option is through the question bank which doesn’t support GIFT. Unless I misunderstood you and you meant that the question order will be randomized.

Thank you so much for your reply so quickly!

Right, randomizing the question order. My apologies.

I found Moodle Cloze and GIFT Code Generator V4.01.xlsm that I am working with but there’s a bit of a learning curve for myself and my team. I tried to attach the excel file, but received an error message that it’s not supported.

Are your questions multiple choice by chance? Or are they a mix of different question types?

Sadly both of the previously shared tools are no longer working. 😫

https://firstcanvas.com/utilities/gift.html

https://docs.moodle.carleton.edu/wiki/GIFT_format#Word_processor_and_spreadsheet_tools_that_create_GIFTs

Both pages no longer loading.

Does anyone have any others? I’m googling but not finding much.

Thanks,

Aimee

I’m hoping to have a solution for you soon.  Do you have a chatgpt account by chance? (free should suffice)

Thanks @pmo ! I will give it a shot and report back. I actually used ChatGPT to create the quiz questions but never considered asking it to put it in Gift format. The world is truly changing! Great idea. Thank you.

It works but you’re only allowed 1 file per day so if you have a lot to do, plan ahead. Mine is 3 files all for one exam but I need to do it as 3 files so I can add the category manually as I import since I can’t specify this when importing.

It would be nice if @Docebo provided a built in way to more easily import questions.

Best,

Aimee
