Hi all,

I’m looking for advice for a problem with renewals.

Context: Most of our courses have two options for renewals; a full course; and a knowledge check only version for those who already know the key learning outcomes.

Problem: Some learners will start the full course, and then switch to the shorter version part way through. They complete that and thing it’s up to date but as the full course is mandatory, they then end up getting reminders to complete it. (I hope this makes sense)

I have tried making them equivalent, but this ends up marking one as complete when they select the other to renew (or so it would seem) - and as learners are prone to avoid key instructions, I’m keen to find an intuitive design to avoid them ‘course hopping’ like this.

Any suggestions, ideas welcome? I bet I’ve missed something obvious - don’t be too harsh if I have :)

@Alex.Robertshaw I think that the most intuitive would be to use a single course, with the knowledge check at the end - configured as the End Object Marker, so learners can jump to it at any time and if someone can pass the test, the whole course is marked as completed, without the need to complete all modules.

How do the learners know if they are eligible to skip the full course and only take the knowledge check?  Are these being assigned or are they self-enrolling?

@JHill1  In such cases we're adding an HTML page as the first module of a course and there we provide a short explanation of the available options and instructions on how to proceed.

I think that in some cases we also had this information already in the course description.

You can also try using the ‘short description’ and / or using folders to organize your content. The folder can have a pretty descriptive text. I agree that making your knowledge check the end object marker so whether they take the full course or just the test, that is the object that will mark the course as completed.

I really like the idea of using an end object marker but I also want to make sure they complete the full course once, so I’m still looking for a way to get both but I may be asking to have my cake and eat it too here…

Thanks for all the input, everyone, I’m the only one looking after our LMS internally and it’s quite a task, nice to feel like I have surrogate LMS team mates here online! (My team are lovely by the way - just don’t work on our LMS!)
