I have noticed a recurring issue where learners complete the content in a course (it shows 100% complete inside the course content) but Docebo doesn’t pick that up and show the course as complete.  It just shows them as “In Progress.”  This only happens about 5-10% of the time, and I haven’t been able to replicate it myself.  This is required compliance training, so it is important for me to get as many people across the finish line as possible.

This only happens to the courses that I built in Rise 360.  The others built in Storyline work just fine.  The courses are uploaded in the xAPI format and displayed in lightbox mode. I was told that the problem could be that there is no “Exit Course” button, but when I add that, I get even more users hung in the In Progress stage because they just click the Close X at the top of the lightbox instead of clicking the Exit Course button.

Does anyone have any guidance on how to deal with this?

YES!!! This has taken us months to figure out! Here is what I have learned!

  1. Remind people to use Chrome.
  2. Select Full Screen (Best Compatibility)
    1. Instead of Play in Lightbox (Best Experience)
  3. Remind users to click that Exit Course button (keep adding them), then be sure they exit back to the course in Docebo before closing the internet browser.

I promise it gets better! This was a huge pain point for us, but after making these changes and sending many reminders it is almost eliminated itself. If you want to be able to recreate it yourself simply complete a course, but don’t exit back to Docebo, just close the tab it opened in on the browser. That’s most often the issue. Good luck!

@Stephanie Dreiling   Thanks so much!  I’m just thrilled to find someone else who understands what I’m talking about.  I’ve been beating my head against this for months!!

Now, I’m off to look that the notifications settings to see if I can figure out a way to automatically send reminders to people who are In Progress.    (“Oops!  Did you mean to leave the course without finishing?  Make sure you click the Exit Course button to get credit for the course.”)

We follow the same process as @Stephanie Dreiling , we have also had success with adding a button at the end of the Rise course that returns them to the LMS. Here are the Rise button settings we use:

You are certainly not alone! I’m struggling with the same issue. @Stephanie Dreiling and @Annarose.Peterson Thank you so much for sharing your insights, will implement this!

@Stephanie Dreiling @Annarose.Peterson @jdclark2 Question for you all. When the learners didn’t mark as complete, did all of the skill check questions record in Docebo? We are seeing that they are not marked as complete and only a portion of the skill check questions record - like 3 out of 6 questions - when I review the xAPI data.

@ehopkins When we have encountered that, it was because the user was timed out of their active Docebo session while they were taking the course.

Our session time out is set to 30 minutes. When a learner is in the middle of a Rise course, and they get sidetracked or walk away from their computer for more than 30 minutes they time out of their active session.  Even though the user is timed out, Docebo keeps the course open, so when the user returns to the course, the remainder of the course will play. But since they are technically logged out, the system will only record what was completed prior to the time out.

You may want to check to see if you have a session time out set up on your platform (located in the Advaced tab of the Advanced Settings).

At the risk of sounding really dumb - how exactly do you go about reviewing the xAPI data?

@ehopkins We don’t actually track our Skill Check Questions, we only look at the results of the final Assessment, it’s far less tracking for us. Also, as far as items the time out issue mentioned above, I second this! We have preached and preached, when you start a class finish it, or at least stop and log out where you want in the middle and don’t just walk away, all sorts of issues can occur here.

And sorry I can’t help on the xAPI, not something I’ve tackled yet as an Admin, I don’t have a lot of programmer support so I’d have to learn it myself, and while I think it would solve a lot of my problems it would take me quite a bit of studying to learn.

I’m in the same boat as @Stephanie Dreiling and so we aren’t publishing to xAPI.  But we can see people’s progress and how they have answered skill checks in a Rise from the Reports tab in the course shell in Docebo.  When I see that the LMS has only recorded a portion of their questions, but they have spent a long time in the course, we are generally able to narrow down that it was a timeout issue.

@Annarose.Peterson @Stephanie Dreiling Thank you! Ours is set to 3 hours, so it’s unlikely… but totally possible with learners!

@jdclark2 In the course management: Reports> User Statistics. Search for the user’s name/ID. Click on the username, click on the learning object. The xAPI data should be there for the Rise course. Unless Docebo times out, apparently!

@Annarose.Peterson I saw that you mentioned using Fullscreen (instead of Lightbox). This article suggest there are some limitations to using fullscreen with xAPI - specifically that data has to be sent within a 5 minute interval. Have you seen issues with this?

Google Chrome is not the only “best” browser to use to ensure completions marking.  I also have as much success using Microsoft Edge (chromium versions).

I am dealing with this same issue, but a few months back a help center specialist told me that we needed to have “play in lightbox” checked. For a while, that seemed to do the trick but this issue has popped up again. Reading through this thread, obviously folks here are saying to select “Fullscreen” instead of “Play in Lightbox” but “Fullscreen” is not even an option for me to to select. The only options I have in the training materials settings for Launch Mode are:
Play Inline
Play In Lightbox
Play in New Window

I am not sure which way to go with this issue. It’s really frustrating me as an Admin and it’s frustrating all of our users.

Any more advice on this?

This is an old topic, but I wanted to share my resolution in case anyone else is having this problem.

The completion issue completely stopped after I recreated the courses using a SCORM file instead of xAPI. Moving forward I will not use the xAPI format.

When I was at Zillow, we were dogged with random xAPI content not completing in Docebo, I never heard what the end was whether Docebo figured it out (if it was on their end) or not. xAPI really isn’t necessary unless your org wants it and uses the output for analytics in my view. Everyone ranges about how xAPI is all that but then aren’t doing anything with the data lol.

At my new company I’ve been using only SCORM so far, but I’m unsure whether it’s a good idea to use the “Exit course link” in the Rise settings - do you? That’s how I landed on this comm. article in the first place. Q2 is, is SCORM 2004 fine on Docebo?

I’m having this issue with SCORM files too… We haven’t tried the lightbox setting and I reached out to the helpline and am wolrking with them… but it is so frustrating because this course worked a month ago. and now it doesn’t.
