Is it possible to reuse custom widgets? For example, we’ve created a custom footer widget. We’d like to be able to just update the widget once, for example, when a link is changed in the footer. As it is right now, we have to go and update the widget on every page.

I would love to be able to do this as well as promote widgets and pages from the sandbox to production sites. It can be frustrating to have to recreate them so many times.
Unfortunately not if you are using the widgets natively. The closest you can get to this is to basically host little widget pages somewhere and embed them into widgets, then when you update your central hosted one they all update. Pros and cons to each approach.
One sidenote though, specifically for footers, have you looked at the central branded footer to at least accomplish that one centrally?
