I’ve created an exam and there are options for max attempt behavior (waiting period after max attempts reached), but I don’t see a setting to cap attempts in general. It seems like after the waiting period, learners can attempt again and again...and again. For learning content knowledge checks, this is fine. In a certification setting, I need a hard cap on the number of times someone can attempt the test after which they’re unable to try again. Is there a way to do this?

Yes that setting is available...

the ability to add a waiting period os only enabled once you have set the number of attempts...if you've entered a number in area marked in red and users can still take the test beyond that limit, that could signify a bug. Have you reached out to support?

Yeah I think this will be an idea because we need both a waiting period between each individual attempt and a maximum number of attempts.

Okay I feel a little dumb, but I solved my own thing. Thanks for the help Irnlab!

My solution is setting the max attempts on the course in which the test is contained at x and the test’s max attempts at 1. I then used the “Enable waiting period between attempts” checkbox with the “Number of hours the test is suspended after the user fails it for the maximum number of times:”  set to 24. This accommodated for a cap of 3 attempts with 24 hours between them.

@nick.thoryk interesting...so with both settings it works? That would be odd...you might want to also follow up with support to ask if this is normal...
