Is it possible to create fields that the user can fill in themselves either in the profile or a course?

I see the option in Advance Settings to force users to fill in mandatory fields upon log in but is there anyway to make a field that is not mandatory but they can edit on their profile?

Hi @aswartz think if you use that option and also expose the fields to the users they can edit as well as input any missign data when the field is designated as required.
