[Update] New Layout for Courses and Learning Plan Player

[Update] New Layout for Courses and Learning Plan Player

Update as of April 24, 2024:

Hello Everyone,

We appreciate your honest feedback on the new course player experience! We're working hard to address your concerns and make it more user-friendly.

Here's what you can expect in the upcoming releases:

  • Simpler navigation: We're streamlining navigation to get you learning faster with fewer clicks.
  • Enhanced clarity: A clearer table of contents will help you track progress and understand the flow of your training.
  • Focus on learning: We're creating a cleaner interface with less emphasis on graphics to put the learning materials front and center. Instructors will also benefit from an improved interface clarity when sessions end.
  • Familiar features return: For e-learning courses, the familiar pre-page option will be making a comeback!

We're also excited to announce a new feature coming later this year:

  • Focus Mode (December release): This optional mode minimizes distractions so you can truly delve into the content. It allows for navigation within courses and learning plans without switching between pages.

Cut-off and Early Access:

The new course player will be mandatory by the end of the year (2024). However, we encourage you to test and activate the new player at your earliest convenience. While you can still use the old player until the deadline, there will be additional features released in the coming months that won't be available on the old platform.

We'll continue to keep you updated on new features and functionality. We'll also be dedicating time in the upcoming release readiness webinar to answer any questions you may have.

Additional Notes:

During this development period, we're also fixing numerous glitches discovered internally and by clients. These fixes will further enhance the overall experience.

We look forward to your continued feedback!

Thank you for the amazing feedback on the new layout of the course page.

It’s been 5 months since we announced the launch of the new Course & Learning Plan Player in Docebo Learn.

This update introduced a number of improvements to the learner experience when viewing Courses and Learning Plans and streamlined processes for Superadmins and Power Users as detailed in this product update post.

In case you missed the announcement or are eager to learn more about the enhancements, check out these other resources:

We originally announced that we’d deprecate the existing Course & Learning Plan player in the October 2023 release, requiring all customers to adopt the new Course & Learning Plan player.

We’ve decided to delay the deprecation of the existing Course & Learning Plan player, with a new target date of Q4 2024.

The rationale behind this decision is based on the below factors:

1. More time for improvements

Thanks to all of you in the community, we’ve received great feedback on the new Course & LP Player during the preview release. We’d like to deliver a few key improvements based on this feedback before deprecating the existing Course & Learning Plan player.

Here are the improvements that we plan to focus on before we deprecate the existing Course & Learning Plan player:

2. Increasing adoption rate

Early adoption rates of the new Course & Learning Plan player are lower than expected, and we’d like more time to provide you with resources for a successful transition.

Thank you all for your continuous feedback related to the new Course & Learning Plan player. We’re excited to continue improving this feature with you.

Please continue sharing feedback by searching for and/or submitting new ideas using the Course and Learning Plan Player (Preview Release) Product Area.

Did this post help you find an answer to your question?

What a relief! Thank you!

Thank you for giving us more time to analyze the new player. More customization would be very welcome, especially if we do not need to use custom CSS.

Another thing that might help increase adoption: It would be great if we could let a group or a branch of users test the player first. We could then gather their feedback and make changes accordingly.I’ll check if there is an idea on this. 😊

Good move guys, makes absolutely sense to take some more time to improve the new course player, which basically is a huge upgrade to the current one but on the same time would have lead to a lot of misunderstandings between admins and end-users.

Please think also the course widgets. We have currently over 50k courses in the LMS - 99% of them has just the course description. Now, if we would activate the new course player for all users, the course description would disappear (since a course landing page is longer existing) and the user would simply see the course player without any further information, since the course widget: course description would need to be activated manually - which is impossible for this amount of courses.

I love that you are supporting those who are not yet satisfied with the new functionality, while ALSO allowing those who’d like to dive in right away the ability to do so. I imagine this makes things much more complicated on your side, but from a client experience perspective it’s fantastic!

Will we see the same improvement in the Discover, Coach & Share Playlist?

Of particular concern to us as all our product training is video based for a global audience:

I notice that the old video player enabled learners to select CC using CC icon which then offered them a dropdown to choose from languages available.  In the new player, a user can use the CC icon to turn it on or off but must figure out that to select another language, they must go to the Settings Icon, select the CC option and then select a language.  This is a huge regression in the user experience and adds 3 clicks to the selection process. Please revert to the old one.

For those who already made the switch in anticipation of the deprecation and wanted time to debug given the all or nothing approach you gave us, are you planning to update all of the problems that have been pointed out in one update come June 2024 or will you roll them out as they are fixed?

Forum|alt.badge.img+3

@claudio.mazza Can you provide any insight to @jmkachidurian’s question above? I too would love to know.

We are also thankful for the delay since the proposed new player really changed the user experience for tests, but not the admin experience when building tests. The user experience changes were also not very positive - loss of question titling, spacing issues, only dark mode etc... It would be great to have a detailed list of changes proposed to not just the course player, but to tests too.  Many of us want to see changes to the test builder for efficiency in the back end along with an easier user experience on the front end.

Please update options on the Course Header in the New course player.  Course Header in New Course Player Displays with Dark Gradient Overlay : For the Solid Color Layout option, you can set a color to use, but it does not in fact show a solid color… it uses a gradient with no options to change the other shades in the gradient. So we can choose to use one of our brand colors, but because of the gradient it does not align with our branding. Same issue when selecting an image. For demonstration purposes, I selected an image with a white background so you can clearly see the dark gradient. Docebo Help desk says to change it with CSS, which you can do if you know enough CSS, but then you lose the ability to add your own images if you made the CSS change

Uploading recordings to an ILT is not working in the new course player page preview mode.  Is this a known bug, and/or is there something I am doing wrong that makes that not work?  The menu pops up to select a file correctly, but then once I select one, it just gives a spinny icon for the rest of time and never makes progress.  If I switch out of preview mode to the old player page, it works fine.

From what I’ve seen the learning plan header dynamically crops differently depending on the aspect ratio of the learner’s screen/window.  You can verify this by dragging your window to different sizes and seeing how the header images changes.  So you upload a big picture, and then various parts of it get chopped off depending on screen size.

I think best practice is to use a fuzzy, non-descript image that represents the “theme” of the learning plan, but not anything that you actually want to be legible or distinct, since it will get cropped, have a darkening screen placed over it, and have text written over it.  It’s more just a pretty theme, not usable information.

@claudio.mazza Hi Claudio...seeing different dates regarding the launch the new player...what is the actual timeline? Is the player being pushed out to everyone un June 2024? If yes, will we still have the option to opt in (or not) after that date and before the old player is deprecated in Q4 2024.

eLearning:

  1. header is too big; and the default font is too small in the marketplace [as well as self-created] course descriptions - makes it seem not essential
  2. files stored in the repository are not readily seen by the end user

ILT:

  1. if there is no training material, then when the user enrolls/launches the module, it only shows a overly large image that there is no training material available,  there should the course description showing for any details the user would need to know;
  2. also, as we don’t have “optional” as a type of training material, we have to load files under the repository

both types of courses:

  1. the tiles for the suggested courses are large and are more visible than the details of the course at hand; these should be smaller as they are merely suggestions
  2. the More Options should be more prominent as well and NOT just the “...” icon,  there are many people that are not that tech savvy and would have NO IDEA this is what to select to unenroll, change session, etc.

Is anybody else having this issue or is there an update?  This feature is broken for us on the new player page, making it impossible to upload recordings after an ILT is complete.  This is the only feature that’s holding us up from going ahead and switching users over to the new player page.

  • Focus on learning: We're creating a cleaner interface with less emphasis on graphics to put the learning materials front and center. Instructors will also benefit from an improved interface clarity when sessions end.

Can you clarify what this means? Does this apply to only ILTs (since you reference sessions) or to eLearning courses as well? I love having bigger images/more graphics (especially the TOC) and a visually engaging interface so “less emphasis on graphics” I really hope doesn’t mean going back to a more stale, text-heavy interface. Are there screenshots available for what you guys are thinking here?

Hoping Claudio reads this.

The new player is too busy. Too many buttons, places to click and too much information to read.

It requires more clicks to start a course. After clicking the start eLearning button, the user has to click another start eLearning button. The second click is just wasted time and an extra click. Especially since there is still another start/resume button to click after this!

The learning plan page header is way too big. The main feature of interest on this page is the list of courses, not the header.

The right side of the learning plan page is wasted now. Especially the learning plan details (Does any student need to know the learning plan ID?) The Average time is on the left side above the course list and just duplicated on the right. The “time to complete” information could easily be put on the left above the course list. The progress area takes up too much space and you don’t need a resume training button here. With the addition of the IN PROGRESS, etc markers it is easy to tell where you left off (good job Docebo!).

Regarding the right side of the course start page with the “go to next course” button. The user has just selected the course they want to take, why give them a “go to next course” button? This makes it confusing for the learner.

Why is the left panel of the course start page there? What is it’s function? It just tells the user that this is a SCORM course. I don’t think most people care or would even know what SCORM is. If you must have this page it would be more helpful to have the course description there (but the preferred place for the course descriptions is the learning plan page as detailed below). Ideally, since I assume some admins find this area useful, there should be a way to hide it. If there is one, please let me know as I have not found it.

The course description is hidden at the bottom of the page - after you click to take the course. The description should be on the initial learning plan page where you can see all courses in the learning plan and read all the descriptions. We put important information for our learners to know here and now it is hidden and the user has to scroll to see it. Most users will not see it. I see that you have a ^ to open the description. Can you make open he default view or give us an option so we can decide to make it the default?

We need to be able to turn off all areas of the screen/new features we want to turn off.

We train clients as well as internal employees so we cannot notify all users of changes and we want our LMS to look good and be easy to use.

Thanks.
