Hey everyone, I’m looking to hear from others about their course naming conventions.

What guidelines do you have in place for how courses are named in your platform?

We don’t currently have any governance or standards for how we title our courses and I’m looking to set some up, and would love to hear what others are doing.

Thanks!

Hi Anna!

We don’t have any governance over course title, but we do have governance over course codes. For those, we use a tri-part convention. Here’s an example: TAX.COMP.123 for “2025 Tax Code Changes”

  • The first segment is from a pre-defined list of abbreviations for our various departments/business units. That helps us quickly see who “owns” the content from a sponsor or subject matter perspective. (In the example, this abbreviation means it is owned by our “Tax” group.)
  • The middle segment has more flexibility and can be any value that the department/business unit deems appropriate. It’s generally a way for them to think about bucketing their assets. While they can get creative, we do encourage them to keep it simple. (In the example, this abbreviation means it’s of a regulatory or compliance nature.)
  • The final segment is the Course ID found in the URL of the course shell. We chose this because those IDs are used elsewhere across Docebo (e.g., CSV enrollments). They are also single-use...no two courses will share “123”...so we can guarantee it’s a unique identifier.

This process gives the business to name courses in a meaningful way to them (and to learners) while giving us a consistent way to identify courses on the back-end without have to leave the course management screen and dig into course properties or training materials.

It’s worked well for us.
