Managing Certification Equivalency and Badging for VILT vs. Self-Paced Courses

I have a VILT course that includes both training and lab time with the instructor. Once completed, users can take an optional exam. We've recently launched a self-paced version of the training course, paired with a separate lab course that users can complete at their convenience. We cannot combine the two courses because the lab requires setup and has limited availability, so scheduling is necessary.

Essentially, after completing the course, users receive a notification to sign up for lab time. Once both the self-paced training and lab courses are finished, they can take the optional exam. We are now trying to determine how to mark the self-paced training and lab courses as equivalent to the VILT course.

We don’t think there’s an existing way to do this, but I wanted to explore the possibility here. Could we create a group that automatically enrolls users in a course marked as equivalent once they complete both the self-paced training and lab courses? I'm hoping someone with more expertise might have a better solution.

As a second part to this, regardless of whether a user completes the VILT course or the self-paced/lab course, they qualify for the certified designation. Is there a way to mix and match these options for badging and recertification, or will they need to be set up separately?

Hi @NMac!

I have an idea for the equivalencies part of the question 😊

So theoretically, you need the person to complete options A & B or 1 & 2 in the list below, right? Then, they can choose to do option C or 3 (not sure if the exam is part of the VILT training material or if it’s a separate course and they’d be taking the exact same exam - the latter would work better for my suggestion, if the context helps).

A- VILT Training

B- VILT Lab Time

C- Optional Exam

1- Self-Paced training course

2- Self-paced scheduled lab time

3- Optional exam

Since options A & B happen in the same VILT, you know that those happen and don’t need to put safeguards in place for that. However, what if you made option 1 a prerequisite for option 2 so that they cannot take option 2 without first completing the self-paced training? Then, simply make option 2 an equivalency for the VILT (A & B).

Then, they can take the optional exam! If you need a way to make it so that only people who have completed either of the equivalent courses can take the exam, let me know.

For the badges and recertification, I know that can be a tricky setup once you include equivalencies. I would check out this Docebo Community thread - it seems like you might get some context here that could help!

I hope this is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to ask follow up questions, this community is an excellent place for coordination!
