[March 2023] Live in Sandbox: User language selection

Hope everyone is having a good start to February. I know it’s early but I honestly feel like I smell Spring just a corner away (Don’t care what the GroundHog says!). With that, I want to share that we are bringing one update to our Sandbox this week:

Option for users to retain the language chosen in “Limbo mode” as their platform language

Those of you who are big fans of ensuring that your learning solution is inclusive and personalized from a language standpoint, you’re going to love this one:

With this feature your users will have the ability to self-select the language of their choice at pre-login and have that language setting remain, even after they enter into your platform.

Let’s drill down into this a bit: Previously when a new user logged into your platform, they’d have the ability to select a language to go through the pre-login process, which generally involves your Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy, change password, etc. They perform these pre-login steps in what we call “limbo mode” (Image below).

ov_tgTkF2LTQuyDWVxJ2UiF31txbY-v2cZJ2f3EJ8gI__blTPcqFXAgfUlrwzlBgb4NBEpiGMb1AQlBKRGfSB1n-PHgcuEr8zeOgwLADHqxZklmm6xJJ7LFgUFxy_3RxNDAi5oFfgksu-BMWunFLx24

After logging into the system, the language used automatically resets to the one set by the admin for the user (ex. The user may set the language to be Spanish during pre-login steps, but then converts to English based on the admins general settings).

Now, we’ve changed things up! We have added a new option in Advanced Settings “Make the Language selected during the pre-login mandatory steps as the user’s default language” (as seen in the image below). Your users will have a more seamless experience wherein they can complete the entire pre-login in the language of their choice and seamlessly continue their chosen language within the learning environment.

Here’s a screenshot of the option that you can check off in Advanced Settings:

Greater personalization, more inclusiveness when it comes to the accommodation of languages and less administrative work for both your admins and users is a WIN in our eyes! With that folks, I wish you a great two weeks and I’ll see you again at the Product Round up later this month!!

📢  We want to hear from you!

Thanks for taking the time to read the March Sandbox post. We’d love to hear what you think! Do you have any ideas or plans to use these updates? Share with us in the comments below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

This is good, but adding Hindi would be better!

Hi. Can I ask, how does this interact with the language setting against the user profile? Is it held in a different place, does it overwrite it? Can we see what a user has changed it to? Thanks

Are there any statistics on usage for the langange setting in “limo mode”? While I like this a lot, I am conserned that the users would overlook it as the focal point of the page is the “Change password” box in the center.

pretty slim pickings for this round...when will we start to see the “good” stuff?? All those great things we've been asked to provide feedback on...so anxious!

Agree with @lrnlab, I thought we were going to see the New Learning Plan and Courses player in Q1.

Also agree with @lrnlab There is some critical functionality like the ability to retake the same courses that we *really* need and had hoped to see...

Any1 tried this feature in Sandbox. For me, it doesn't work. The local language changed only in pre-login page as soon as I entered into platform by default it shows only in EN instead of local language.

Hi all,

I can’t answer about the most requested features (new course/learning plan player and multiple course completions), but I can answer regarding the “Option for users to retain the language chosen in “Limbo mode” as their platform language”:

@USJG06 @Ryan Steer if the setting in Advanced Settings > Users > Options > “Make the language selected during the pre-login mandatory steps as the user's default language” is ON, and the user picks a language in the limbo mode, the language picked will overwrite the user language in the platform. It means that it will also overwrite the language in the user profile, and you’ll be able to see the new language choice if you check the user details from the user management, or if you export the language details for users using the CSV export feature in the user management.

@dianex.gomez we currently have no statistics about the usage of the language picker in the limbo mode. It’s true, you cannot be sure that a user actually uses it, but I’d say it’s more likely for them to use it for example when they have to accept the privacy policy or terms&conditions, or when they have to fill in the mandatory user fields because it’s likely that they want to read those information in a language they feel comfortable with. The language picker that we offer there is important for compliance use cases where we should at least give users the option to read PP and T&C in a language they understand. Then we’re not sure that users will actually use the language picker, but if they do so, we’ll use that information to set their preferred language automatically and saving them the trouble to go and change it from their Profile Page.

@Baskaran venugopal the new setting is OFF by default, you have to turn it on to see the new behavior.

Hope this helps!

@lrnlab @telias @dianex.gomez

Thank you for the feedback! Our amazing product team is hard at work building solutions, some of which have been mentioned in the comments above. As for exact timelines, as you guys know, we want to ensure we are bringing products and features to you when they are at their best mode of functioning (no compromises there because you deserve the best). We appreciate the patience and check into our product round up post next week! I'm going to share a few nuggets that you'll get to play with in the platform while we cook up more for you!

I agree. I turned ON the settings before teste it out… Still it doesn't work for me.. Anyways, I have a ticket open with support team.

@serena.noto Thanks for surfacing this in the comments.

📢 Sharing some feedback for Docebo here: This type of information really needs to be in the announcement post. Anytime Docebo introduces a new admin feature with a option state, please document what state it will be in when implemented in the release notes.

+1 to @lrnlab. We haven’t had any noteworthy updates to Docebo Learn this year. I’m hoping something big is coming.

Is this no longer a part of the February Release? I don’t see an option to set the time when I edit an enrollment in our Sandbox.

Docebo Learn - Set the time for completed course enrollments

When setting the status of a course enrollment as completed from the Course Management area, you can now select the time of completion, besides the date. Up to this release, when a course enrollment was set as completed, the completion time was always set to midnight in the platform timezone.

I’m glad to see the language selector in limbo mode! My ask would be that I’d love to see that language selector persist in the top-right menu *after* login too. The current language selection option isn’t super easy to get to in your profile, it takes quite a few clicks, which can be alot especially if you’re navigating in a language that is not your preferred.

Hello @Jessica Tart ,
you are correct, setting the time for completed course enrollments was actually included in February release! It has been released on Feb 22nd, just a couple of days after your post, so it should now show up in your installation.  Thank you!

Hi @sgary, we’re aware that it’s not very intuitive for a user to change their language preference once they’re logged in. We don’t want to add the language switch in the post-authentication header because the language switch is something that a user don’t use very often (probably not more than once or twice in their life in the LMS) and for this reason we don’t want to devote too much space in the header which is already quite crowded. We have medium-long term plans to make this experience more intuitive, but in a different way.

In order to mitigate this need, I can suggest that you place a custom content box widget in your users’ home page, with a button that leads directly to the Preferences Section of the My profile page (deeplink: https://mylms/learn/my-profile#preferences).

Hope this helps!

Did this just go live? We had an issue where people with English set had the incorrect page name sin the hamburger menu where the English UK folks saw it correctly
