There have been multiple posts about this, but no easy answer as far as I can tell.  So please help me understand…

Simpl...i want staff to do one e-learning module, and in 2 years be reminded to do a refresher module, but one that is different.  after that I’m happy for them to do the same 2nd module every 2 years indefinitely.

How do i do this.

@KTJD This is the exact scenario that we have for many of our trainings that require recertification!

With the NEW certifications that just launched, this is not yet possible, though the Docebo team has mentioned that they’re working on it. From the recent FAQ in the Beta group:

“Based on the most requested beta feedback, we plan to add support for renewing a certification with different courses than the initial one. Admins will be able to configure the courses required for the initial certification path and, optionally, a set of courses required for the renewal path. Following GA in the October release, we first plan to complete support for the new certifications across My Team, My Transcript, and standard custom reports. We then plan to address this feedback as part of our 2027 roadmap. Timelines are not yet final.”

For us, we can’t switch to the new certifications until this feature is added. In the meantime, we’re staying with our current setup with the legacy certifications. We assign both the initial training and the refresher to the same certification. It’s not a perfect system - the learner can technically choose either training during renewal, so we always have a handful of people choose the full training or both accidently. We’re really looking forward to be able to improve this next year. And curious if others have found different or better workarounds.

Your use case is similar to ours. Learners complete a base course to certify, then every two years complete a recertification refresher. We send them reminders 3 months, 30 days and 7 days before expiry, and also 1 month and 1 year after (if expired) using the ‘Certification has expired’ notification.

For us, each year we create new recertification courses so the renewal content always reflects current changes. This is where you could have an issue. Under the current ‘complete a different course’ configuration, once your learners complete the recertification course the first time it will no longer be visible to them in the renew process. You would need to create a new version of the course periodically in order for your learners to be able to renew again in two years. As far as I’m aware (under the current/legacy configuration) there’s no way around this. In theory the grand new plan will make this possible, but we haven’t seen this yet. My suggestion would be to kick off with this configuration, and hope the new model will cover your needs. If not, in a couple of years just duplicate the existing recert course so learners have a new course they can renew through.
