Observation | Articulate licensing strategies seem like they are getting aggressive

As we have been seeing some true cost creep happening in an accelerated pace across the industry with our everyday tools, I have to report on something that one can almost feel is a slimy practice.

Articulate 360 - sent along a quote to me this year specifying what the cost would be if I renew on my contract renewal date. And I noticed there was a $250 cost hike per seat that we would have to eat to take advantage of Articulate AI Teams.

To be transparent - I run a small shop with only three licenses open. This will not break the bank, but even with 3 seats, we are talking about a $750 dollar cost which means the cost is halfway to the cost of another “legacy” license. At a time where my team (and I can only imagine many teams) has been asked to conserve, this has shown up...and if I wasnt paying attention? I would not take any action.

Reading the fine print - I need to one up the license before a certain date to take advantage of the legacy pricing. Now trust me - I get it / subscription models need to do their thing to bring revenue to the table. But for things that were rather cost stable for a relatively long run? This sure seems to be like we are being price gouged at one level or another.

A slowly ever-increasing cost to your subscription.

What are your findings? You gonna eat the cost hike?????

You’re automatically gonna pay more for those new AI features whether you use them or not.

ActivePresenter is only $500 for a perpetual license and only 40% for an upgrade to new major version ($200) - i.e. from AP9 to AP10

Not sure why it isn’t more popular - I am loving it! Tons of bang for the buck.

@gstager - I get it. Thank you. It really is a tough trend at play these days. We have chatted about this - ActivePresenter is a solid alternative in the mix of authoring tools and I personally have tried it in the past.

I may be in a rock and a hard place with needing to keep one license around to keep some support going for our internally authored courses, but with pricing like this - us “old timers” are gonna complain before we drink the coolaid and pay into the licensing. Moving an ID approach for a shop can be a heck of a migration task...and one that i would rather just pay the few hundred more for now.

I shot the customer success team a note - I am going to see if I can leverage their legacy pricing and one up early with them...or even see if they are open to grandfathering a contract and older pricing with paying more into the contract upfront.

@dklinger Please let us know whether you can get a legacy pricing! We are in the same boat.
