Question

Ability to restrict a user only one course

We have some users that we want to limit their access to only certain courses. For example, John’s account should only ever be able to access Course A.

I’m aware of how to restrict courses to particular users using groups, but is there way to say this group should only have access to this course and no other course?

Because I’m only looking to limit a small group of users to a small group of courses, I don’t want to go the exclusionary route (all groups can access all courses minus John’s group); I’d rather proactively allow one group to only access the small number of courses (John’s group can only access these courses).

you can control things down to that level using Catalog visibility rules. Remember that a course can be added to any and all catalogs; the visibility rules are what determine who can see and access what courses from your catalogs

I still need the course to be visible to all other users though. If I put it in a catalog that only John has access to, will that limit the access to others? I’m thinking of how in learning plans, if you lock Course B behind Course A, even if you’re not enrolled in the learning plan, you can’t access Course B unless you’ve completed Course A.

not it will not...you can have catalog A with access for only person and the same course in catalog B that grants access to everyone else. You;’ll need to make sure that the users who see catalog A do not see catalog B...Essentially you need 2 catalog each with their own visibility rules.
