Does enrolling a group into a course overwrite existing enrollment data?

For example, say I enroll a group with three users:

  • Person A - Enrolled
  • Person B - Enrolled
  • Person C - Enrolled

The users complete the course:

  • Person A - Complete
  • Person B - Complete
  • Person C - Complete

Two more users are automatically assigned to the group. What happens if I enroll the group again from the course management area? Is the enrollment data preserved for person A, B, and C? Or, will it get reset by new group enrollment?

Results 1:

  • Person A - Complete
  • Person B - Complete
  • Person C - Complete
  • Person D - Enrolled
  • Person E - Enrolled

Results 2:

  • Person A - Enrolled
  • Person B - Enrolled
  • Person C - Enrolled
  • Person D - Enrolled
  • Person E - Enrolled

Note: I already have an enrollment rule set up, but for some reason it didn’t trigger for a small number of users. Thus, I am looking to do a manual group enrollment.

re-enrolling a user who is already enrolled and perhaps, with a different status other than enrolled, will remain with their current status and will not be changed to enrolled.

Hi @IanMonk,

I did a test, and when you try to manually enroll someone already in the course, the system will remove the user from the users available for enrollment (because the user is already enrolled no matter the enrollment status). I believe that is basically to avoid the possibility to overwrite by accident the progress of the user.

Thanks @Rosalie.

I observed the same behaviour when trying to manually enroll specific users, but it doesn’t stop you from enrolling a group, where some members of the group are already enrolled.

Thanks @lrnlab! I did a small test on my end and observed the same result. I wanted to confirm with a community member before risking it and potentially overwriting thousands of completions. Have a great day.

indeed...always best to test it out for yourself.
