Learning Plan Series with Prerequisites

There is no “quick and easy” way I’ve found to do this. What we do is we set up the last course of the prerequisite learning plan to be the first course of the subsequent learning plan, with all courses in that learning plan being locked until that course is completed. 

For example: 

• Learning Plan A has courses 1-4
• Learning Plan B has courses 4-8 

In Learning Plan A, courses 1-3 are open. Course 4 is locked until courses 1-3 are completed and then course 4 opens. In Learning Plan B, courses 5-8 are locked until course 4 (the first course of Learning Plan B and last course of learning plan A) is completed. Once course 4 is completed in Learning Plan A, it will open the courses in Learning Plan B. You can set this up for multiple learning plans (we currently have an onboarding program of 5 learning plans with this logic).

For notifications, you can use “User has completed the course” notification to send to the learner once course 4 is completed, prompting them to go to the next learning plan.

We’ve had to be very clear in our instructions for the learning plans that the courses/progression is dependent on all courses being completed.

Thank you for this information! It truly helped solve our problem. Here is what happened for us: 

We needed to create 3 Learning Plans where learners must complete one level before moving to the next.

Our setup goes like this:

• Level 1 Quiz requires the learner to complete all Level 1 courses.
• Level 2 Quiz requires the learner to complete all Level 2 courses and pass/complete the Level 1 Quiz.
• Level 3 Quiz requires the learner to complete all Level 3 courses and pass/complete the Level 2 Quiz.

This creates a progression like:

Level 1 Courses → Level 1 Quiz → Level 2 Courses → Level 2 Quiz → Level 3 Courses → Level 3 Quiz

The quizzes act as the gate between each Learning Plan.

Our main issue was that when we added the prerequisite to the individual courses, Docebo locked those courses everywhere in the LMS. Instead, we added the prerequisite to the quiz at the end of each Learning Plan, rather than to all of the courses.

This allows the courses to remain accessible while requiring learners to complete the previous level before they can take the next level's quiz.

Another thought, would be to send a “Learner has completed a Learning Plan” notification, and use that as a cue to enroll into LP 2, 3, 4...etc.

So hide LP 2, 3, 4 from the catalog - and only allow enrollment based on individuals clicking a “hey enroll in this LP for Step #” email they could receive associated to the LP completion.

We're redesigning our LEAD Program for 2027 to include progressive development stages within each leadership level. One challenge we've encountered is that Docebo does not currently support nested learning plans.

Our goal is for leaders to move through learning in a specific sequence based on a defined timeline, not necessarily course completion. We have considered using Catalogs with the Learning Plans incorporated, but that doesn’t solve our problem completely.
