We want to allow users to follow the same course to renew a certificate linked to a learning plan.

The way we thought it should work:

  • archive enrolment on all courses within the LP with the option to archive and re-enrol resetting the learning materials. 
  • user completes materials again.
  • certificate is issued with new dates based on the new completion.

This doesn’t work. No certificate is issued after completing the materials again. 

Does anyone have experience with this? I thought this was why the archive enrollment functionality was introduced.

If you're talking about the renewing a Certification, the only way to invoke that (with the proper settings on the certification) is for the users to click the RENEW button found under My Activities. Using the notificaitons to signal a renewal is the best way we found to get the users to right spot to renew. The renew button will archive the previous completion data and allow them to retake the course.

This causes so many problems for us as people inevitably don’t click the link. I (wrongly it seems) that the course enrollment archive had been introduced to provide another way to renew.

@aswartz - a question - have you dived at the root of the issue? You definitely got the cause down. Folks arent clicking on the link. Is there something that you can do with your email notification to make an image look like a button with an href to the learning plan  so folks do not miss it?

An idea - Can you change up your front page a bit and add a section for recertification?
Where it will help to scream at individuals a bit more?

Admittedly - I am interested in hearing more - but I think this is a challenge for many that need more of a roaming approach to be supported (that can be satisfied really only with auto-archiving multiple attempts of elearning courses).


@aswartz there is also a project going on to improve this app so we may see some important updates later this year...


@dklinger we did that with a custom widget but it can only bring the user to the tab on the My Activities page...users still need to click RENEW which amazingly some still don't find...I heard they are supposed to provide a proper Certification widget so maybe that will the fix we need…??

When you open up a course for renewal there are two buttons - one that says ‘Renew Certification’ and the other to ‘start learning now’ we communicate in the email message and even include an image with big arrows pointing to the correct button and put it in the course description etc. but some (kind of a lot actually) inevitably click ‘start learning now’. People don’t read apparently and are going at a million miles an hour and it causes us a lot of work to clean it up and get our compliance numbers accurate.

I’ve been hearing that for six years. We have submitted a lot of input for that project but so far haven’t been contacted. I really hope something comes out of it but there have been promised improvements in this area for so long with very little delivered that I am losing hope.
