How do I configure retraining criteria for Certifications?

The way it’s currently working in the beta the learner would still need to complete the required courses that are part of the certification, or you would need to manually award it.  Since like the current set-up you are only given the renewal if indicate you’re renewing when starting (you can’t just take the course directly) equivalent courses don’t trigger anything.   

Hi ​@Adam Ballhaussen The new workflow automatically awards the certification once assigned mandatory courses are completed, while admins retain the option to issue the certification manually as well.

​@jasmine.baretto ​@alessandro.riccelli can you please explain how to define the assigned mandatory courses for a Certification if they’re different from the courses required to earn the original certification? That’s the capability from the legacy Certifications that I’m looking to achieve in the new Certifications experience.

I’m attaching a screenshot below of the legacy capability I’m seeking in the new Certifications experience, highlighted in the Renewing with other courses or learning plans section of the knowledge base, which I linked to in my original message.

Are there plans to support this same capability in the new Certifications? I can’t currently find a way to do this in the beta.​​​​​​​

​@jasmine.baretto We’re also looking for the same functionality that Adam is mentioning. This functionality exists in the legacy but seems to be lost in the revamp - unless I’m missing something? Some additional info about our use cases below. Happy to answer any questions as this is very important functionality for us. Thank you!

• Many of our certifications are awarded via the completion of learning plans (usually a combination of eLearning and ILT courses taken in a specific order).
• However for many certifications, we allow for more than 1 path for users to get the certification:
  • Certifications awarded by 2 learning plans or 2 courses. A learner can complete EITHER learning plan/course to be awarded or renew the certification. Users are not required to complete both learning plans/courses.
  • Certifications awarded by either a learning plan or a course. The learning plan is a full, initial training and the course is an abridged “refresher.” 
    • Users MUST take the learning plan to get the certification for the first time.
    • Then for renewal, they are allowed to and encouraged to take the “refresher” course instead. 

For the above - Is there a way for admins to assign a certification manually without triggering the user to be enrolled into the courses within the certification? Sometimes we need to award users certifications manually and don’t expect them to complete additional training (like when they’ve completed equivalent training).

Thank you both for the detailed feedback here and for flagging your specific use cases.

This capability of defining a different set of courses for renewal than what was required to originally earn the certification, is not part of the new Certification and Retraining GA release in October.

We've logged this feedback and it's on our radar as we plan future roadmap work beyond GA.

We don't have a firm timeline to share yet. Once the beta period wraps up, we'll take all of the feedback gathered, including this thread and the detailed use cases you have shared here, and use it to inform our roadmap decisions.

Thanks for raising the last question in your comment abive.

To confirm: this isn't currently possible directly with certification enrollments. When a user is enrolled in a certification, they must also be enrolled in all its child courses, this is by design and we can't create gaps in that enrollment. So there isn't a way to assign a certification and complete it for a learner while bypassing enrollment in the underlying courses.

Hi ​@jasmine.baretto Thanks for your reply and sharing this info. I appreciate that the team is collecting this feedback and will take it into consideration for the roadmap. However, it’s disappointing that this is not planned for GA, since this represents a removal of basic functionally from the certifications feature. I hope that this functionality will be added back before the legacy certifications are deprecated.

Thanks also for your reply about manually awarding certifications. This is also a functionality loss for us, though not as impactful as losing the ability for multiple certification paths. To provide some additional info: For our use case, I believe we could work around not being able to assign certifications without the courses IF we could set up multiple paths for one certifications (using a “dummy” course without training material connected to the certification, which could be marked as complete by admins).
