Renewal and Course Completions

Hi,

We've been testing the new Certification and Retraining functionality and we are a bit lost on the following

1. Course Completion Status Reset During Renewal

When a certification becomes due for renewal, all previously completed courses lose their completion status.

For our recertification process, we would like learners to complete only the courses added as part of the renewal. We typically do not renew every course within a certification path, but instead add a few new courses. Therefore, we do not want learners to restart the entire certification from scratch.

Is there a way to:

  • Retain completion status for selected courses during renewal?
  • Configure recertification so that only newly added courses need to be completed?

2. Impact of Adding New Courses to an Existing Certification

When a new course is added to an existing certification, learners who have already earned the certification keep their certified status (which is great). However, newly enrolled learners must complete all courses in the path, including the newly added ones, to become certified. This creates inconsistencies, as learners enrolled in the same certification follow different learning paths and couldn’t find a way to adjust this one.

Is there a way to lock the certification requirements so that only a predefined set of courses is required, regardless of any courses added later? Ideally, certification requirements would only be updated during scheduled renewal periods, which typically occur three times per year in our case.

Thank you in advance,

Georgiana

Hi @georgiana.moc – do you think your first use case would be covered if Docebo introduced the capability to Renew with other courses or learning programs?

I’m imagining that instead of adding new courses to the original Certification (Learning Plan), you’d create a new Course or Learning Plan that learners would need to complete for renewal, then set that Course/Learning Plan as the content to use to renew the original Certification.

I started another thread on this topic in the beta group here:

Please chime in over there if this would be relevant for you as well

Hi Adam,

Thank you for your response and for sharing the discussions from the other group.

Our ideal solution would be either the ability to add new courses to an existing certification or, when creating a new certification, to use equivalencies for courses that learners have already completed.

Currently, our process is entirely manual. During recertification, we first unenroll users from the existing Learning Plans, then update those Learning Plans with the new courses, and finally re-enroll the users. As you can imagine, this is time-consuming and occasionally leads to inconsistencies. We use this approach as not all our courses have to be completed again on renewal.

So far, we have not identified an alternative approach, and we were hoping that the Certification Renewal functionality would help address this challenge.

Thanks,

Georgiana

Hi @georgiana.moc

Thank you for sharing this detailed feedback and for testing the new Certification & Retraining functionality. We understand that your recertification process does not require learners to repeat every course in the original certification. Instead, renewal needs to focus on new or updated training while preserving prior completions.

Current Certification & Retraining functionality

The new Certification & Retraining experience improves the certification lifecycle through dedicated certification management, expiration and retraining configuration, automated renewal triggering, archived enrollment history, and a clearer renewal workflow. General Availability is currently planned for October 28, 2026.

However, the current release does not fully support the renewal model described above. When a certification is renewed, the previous enrollment is archived. The current functionality does not support retaining selected course completions, automatically requiring only newly added or updated courses, versioning certification requirements, scheduling requirement changes for a future renewal cycle, or automatically recognizing course equivalencies for renewal.

Adding courses to an existing certification also does not create a separate, versioned requirement set for each renewal cycle. As a result, your current Learning Plan process or API-based automation may still be required to retain selected completions and manage the renewal-specific course set.

Future direction

The public beta is intended to gather feedback like this. We will review all feedback as we plan future enhancements to the Certification & Retraining model. If any of these requirements is particularly important to your workflows, please feel free to submit a corresponding idea for consideration.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your use case so clearly.

Best regards,
Jasmine
