Tiered or Nested Certifications

Hi Nicolò,

As the team are rearchitecting the certification system in line with Learning Plan logic - presumably to extend the capabilities and configurable options - is there consideration for developing tiered or nested certification paths, so that certifications can be interrelated?

I have previously developed complex certification programs on another LMS platform where learners would have to achieve multiple Level 1 certifications before moving to Level 2, and so on. Recertifying a Level 2 cert would automatically reset and align the expiry on the underlying Level 1 certs (which allowed the Level 1 certs to remain active and support other Level 2 certs). The logic was a little tricky, but it gave our customers a building-block approach to achieving certifications across different technical domains.

Currently, as I understand it, LPs can’t have prerequisites - pre-reqs can only be set on courses. Whilst it is potentially possible to create the right logic using specially constructed courses (assessments?) within the LPs, if you are currently creating a new certification configuration experience, it might be advisable to take this opportunity to consider enhancing the logic and prerequisites that connect certifications together.

I think I can help as I recently created a multi tiered program. The short answr is we dd it using automatic group assignment and making learning plans and catalogs only available to specific groups. So certification 1 is available to all. Complete it and you are added to a group that has access to register for certification #2. Complete that and you have access to certification #3.

It is not completely the same as prerequisites, but allows you to create a path where the learner can stop wherever they are comfortable, work at their own pace, and it is 100% maintenance free.

Hope this helps. Happy to add more details if you want them.

Hello @dgibbscve  and @Davefox

I can confirm that, at the moment, using Automatic Groups is indeed the recommended approach to manage tiered or leveled certification paths.

Looking ahead, our broader vision for Certifications includes supporting prerequisite relationships between certifications, and potentially forms of conditional renewals, so that higher-level achievements could influence or preserve the status of related ones — which would ultimately cover the kind of use case you described.
