Question

Can we get managers to evaluate file upload assignments?

Is there a way to create a power user profile where we can grant permissions for someone to view and evaluate the file uploaded in a course assignment? Ideally I want managers to go in and view the files submitted by their staff and evaluate it.

Think if you enrol them in the course with the Instructor level, they can do that without the need to make them a PU.

Thanks, Imlab! Will that show them assignments for the entire org or just their reporting line? I’d like to limit it to only the folks that report to them.

Hmm, don’t think you’ll be able to that. The PU route might help since you can limit who they see that way.

The short answer is: Yes, you can absolutely do this using a Power User profile, but the specific combination of permissions is what usually trips people up.

The Solution: Permission Profile Configuration

In several organizations I've worked with, we’ve set up a "Manager-Evaluator" profile. To allow a Power User to see and evaluate assignments for their team, you need to grant the following three specific permissions within a Power User profile:

  1. Courses / View: This allows them to see the course in their management view.
  2. Courses / Evaluation: This is the critical one—it unlocks the "Learner Assignments" area within the course reports.
  3. Reports / Edit: This is the "gotcha." Without this, the Power User can view the assignment file, but they won't see the buttons to actually leave a score or mark it as passed/failed.

How to set it up:

  • Create the Profile: Go to Admin Menu > Power Users > Profiles and create a new profile with the three permissions mentioned above.
  • Assign Resources: This is where you limit them to just "their staff." When you assign the Power User to the profile, ensure their User Resource is set to their specific Branch (or a Group if you're using those).
  • Assign Courses: Don't forget to also assign the specific Courses (or a folder/category) as resources to that Power User so they have the authority to manage those specific assignments.

Once configured, the managers will be able to go to Admin Menu > Course Management, click on the course, and head straight to the Reports tab. There, they'll see a Learner Assignments sub-tab where they can download the files and submit their evaluations.

Pro Tip:

I've found that managers often forget to check for pending assignments. I usually recommend setting up a Notification (Event: User has submitted an assignment) and targeting the "Power User" (manager) so they get an email the moment a team member uploads a file.

Let me know if you need help narrowing down the resource assignments for those managers!
